Academy for Advanced & Creative Learning

AcademyACL Read-a-thon: October 12-15, 2012

We only do one all-school fundraiser all year... no product sales!
Our philosophy for fundraising focuses on our goal for ‘community’:
We “raise friends” and we celebrate the joy of a highly challenging, highly supportive education at AcademyACL.

What is a “Read-a-Thon”?

Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning is holding its 3rd Annual Read-a-thon. This event raises FRIENDS and FUNDS in order to expand the capacity of AcademyACL to meet students’ needs. Students find sponsors and then try to read or listen to as many pages as they can during the time limit. They tell their sponsors how many pages they read and then collect the pledges. Some sponsors donate a flat amount, some donate per page with a maximum limit~ there are many options.

“R3: Refining our goals, Relating to our community, and Realizing our dreams”

We want everything we do, including our “friend & fundraising” to move us towards that goal... We want to connect with our community. Students, teachers, parents, and community members get to share the love of their favorite books together, and money raised supports a variety of projects for the school year. Through our Read-a-thon we also meet local businesses and community leaders who care about the hard work and challenging learning objectives that our students strive to meet every day.

What’s the Schedule?

During Read-a-thon Week, local authors will read their own books to students in class, and they'll discuss the writing process and their own joy for reading. IF YOU ARE AN AUTHOR (or know someone!), please sign up in the office. On Friday, October 12th, students are invited to come in their Pajamas or dressed as their Favorite Author or Character (nothing scary or inappropriate). Students begin their “page count” at 8:00am. They are dismissed at noon (no lunch served) to provide data time for teachers. Students are invited back at 4:00pm. From 4:00-5:30pm, it’s time to picnic, find a favorite reading spot, visit author’s tables and the Usborne Book Fair, and begin reading!!

What’s the Schedule? (continued)

At 5:30 we will have a Reading Celebration Assembly, and at 6:00pm the really serious fun begins as students try to read as many pages as possible. An adult must accompany every student in Divisions I-IV during the entire event. Division V students may be unattended with a signed permission slip. Students in Divisions I-II may stay as long as they like until 10:00pm. At 10pm, we’ll celebrate the pages of any remaining DI & II students and wave them home with their parents. From 10pm to midnight, we invite our Midnight Hawks in Divisions III-V to stay and read. At midnight, we’ll wave home the Midnight Hawks! We encourage students to keep reading throughout the weekend as much as they can within their families’ schedules... and then they stop! at 8:00pm on Monday night to record their pages. We will be eager to see their results on Tuesday morning. Students may read at home OR at school, and may also listen to pages.

How is this money used?

AcademyACL is a public charter school funded by per-pupil-revenue (PPR) from the state of Colorado. That money has been reduced each year with state budget cuts. Read-a-thon funds expand our capacity by providing additional money for our arts program, reading materials, classroom equipment and supplies, technology, professional development, enrichment (after-school) scholarships, lesson planning, expeditionary learning and more. We work very hard to str-e-t-c-h every dollar!
